Lessons From A Hosta

Living in Minnesota you come to appreciate the changing of the seasons.  We had the Imagemildest winter since we’ve moved here, which made me ecstatic to say the least.  I look forward to spring with eager anticipation.  My husband and I were working in the yard this weekend getting the flower beds ready for spring.   Much to my amazement we already have new buds growing beneath the old, dead leaves.  Hostas are big in Minnesota.  We have three big Hosta plants in the back yard and they have tons of new buds coming up already.  It made me realize that things are not always as they appear on the surface.  You see, on top of those new buds were old, dead, leaves that had frozen over the winter.  It looked as if the plants had died and there was no hope of life again.  As I began to dig out the old leaves I found beautiful, green, new life underneath.  This can also be the case in our lives.  You may feel like what you are going through has been very similar to a cold harsh winter, or even worse.  You may feel like you have lost all hope, but let me assure you, underneath it all, there is something new God is about to do in your life.  How do I know that?  Isaiah 43:19 is one of my favorite scripture, and it says,

“ For I am about to do something new.  See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?  I will make a pathway through the wilderness.  I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.”

Just like the seasons are changing, and flowers are blooming, the grass is getting green, the birds are starting to sing again, in the same way God wants to cause you to, “Spring Forth” into something “New.”  Winter is gone, new life is here. It’s time to do some spring cleaning in your life and make room for the new things God wants to do.  Read my previous post entitled, “Take Out The Trash,” to find out more on how to do spiritual spring cleaning in your life.

What are some new things that God wants to do in you? For starters, He wants you to be closer to Him than you ever have before.  We’ve all heard that we should pray and read our Bible every day, but can you honestly say that you are faithful to do that?  Most people are not, including me.  We have to make a new commitment to spend time with the Lord every day.  Time with God is like a breath of fresh air, like a cold glass of water on a hot day.  His presence is refreshing to our soul.  I love what Psalm 19:7 has to say…

“The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”

Do you need to be refreshed, open up your Bible and let God’s Word breathe new life into you today.  In the busyness of life, we have to find time to get alone with God and allow ourselves to be refreshed.  Have you ever felt like you can’t take another thing going wrong in your life, like you are about to break or you want to give up? We’ve all had these feelings at one time or another in our lives.  When you start to feel this way you need to run to God. Get out your Bible and begin to read the Word of God out loud so that you can hear it.  Look up scriptures that pertain to your situation.  Meditate on the Word of God and you will feel the life of God flooding your soul.  You will feel alive again. You will have a new hope as you wait in God presence.

Prayer is a powerful weapon that God has given us.  Your words have the ability to create, to bring life, and positive change into your circumstances.

James 5:16 says, “…The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful results.

Prayer opens the door for God to move in your life.  Ask God for what you need.  Ask, and keep on asking… (Matthew 7:7). After you have asked Him, then begin to thank Him for doing it.  Keep thanking Him for the answer until you see it happen in your life.  Don’t give up!  I prayed for a husband for 7 years, before I saw the results of my prayers.  Some prayers won’t be answered right away, but if you stay in faith, you will see the Will of God come to pass in your life.  God blessed me with a wonderful man of God, who far exceeds what I could have ever hoped for.  Prayer changes things. I had a friend in college who couldn’t figure out why she was having such a hard time praying.  I asked her if she was praying out loud, so she could hear herself and she said, “No.” Make sure when you pray, you pray out loud so you can hear your own words of faith. Pray the Word of God, speak life and speak it out loud. It makes all the difference.

I want to encourage you today to get a fresh new outlook.  Believe that God is going to do new things in your life.  Begin to see it happening.  Make the necessary changes that you need to make to get closer to God.  Seek God for your future, for decisions you need to make. Ask God for what you need and keep asking. Thank Him for doing it until you see it come to pass.  Just like spring is coming forth, God is springing you forth to new levels of increase in your life. You are moving into more joy, more peace, more love, more unity in your relationships.  God wants to do something new in you, see it and receive it today.  Be blessed!
